SCOPE:1.1 Form:This specification covers continuous, multiple-strand, roving of Type “S-2“glass impregnated with a heat-curable epoxy resin matrix and processed to a“B“ stage condition.1.2 Application:T

6、his roving has been used typically for filament winding of rocket motorcases, pressure vessels,aircraft, and related structures, but usage is notlimited to such applications.1.3 Safety - Hazardous Materials:While the materials, methods, applications, and processes described orreferenced in this spec

7、ification may involve the use of hazardous materials,this specification does not address the hazards which may be involved in suchuse. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:3.1 Material:3.1.1 Roving: Shall be “20 End“ Type “S-2“ Glass, treated immediforming wit

16、ve a shelf life of not lessthan three months from date of impregnation when packaged in vapor-proof,heat-sealed bags and stored at not higher than -18 C (0 F).3.1.5 Cure: Product shall become fully processed by filament winding undertension of 12 to 15 pounds force (53.4 to 66.7 N) and curing, using

17、temperature ranges and times recommended by the manufacturer; however,curing time, exclusive of the post cure, shall not exceed five hours.3.2 Properties:The product shall conform to the requirements of 3.2.1 and 3.2.2; tests shallbe performed on the product supplied and in accordance with specified

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS:4.1 Responsibility for Inspection:(R)

24、The manufacturer of the product shall supply all samples for manufacturerstests and shall be responsible for performing all required tests. Purchaserreserves the right to sample and to perform any confirmatory testing deemednecessary to ensure that the product conforms to the requirements of thisspe

25、cification.4.2 Classification of Tests:4.2.1 Acceptance Tests: Tests for resin solids (3.2.1.1), resin flow (3.2.1.4),and tensile strength as cured (3.2.2.1) are acceptance tests and shall beperformed on each lot.4.2.2 Preproduction Tests: Tests for all technical requirements arepreproduction tests

26、and shall be performed prior to or on the initialshipment of the roving to a purchaser,when a change in ingredients and/orprocessing requires reapproval as in 4.4.2, and when purchaser deemsconfirmatory testing to be required.4.2.2.1 For direct U.S. Military procurement, substantiating test data and

27、, whenrequested, preproduction test material shall be submitted to thecognizant agency as directed by the procuring activity, contractingofficer, or request for procurement.4.3 Sampling and Testing:(R)Sufficientrovingshall be taken at random from each lot to perform allrequired tests. Except as spec

28、ified in 4.3.3, the number of determinationsfor each requirement shall be as specified in the applicable test procedureor, if not specified therein, not less than three.4.3.1 A lot shall be all roving from the same batches of glass and resin producedin one continuous run and presented for manufactur

29、ers inspection at onetime.4.3.2 A batch of resin shall be that quantity of resin formulated and mixed atthe same time.4.3.3 When a statistical sampling plan has been agreed upon by purchaser andmanufacturer, sampling shall be in accordance with such plan in lieu ofsampling as in 4.3 and the report o

30、f 4.6 shall state that such plan wasused.4.4 Approval:4.4.1 Sample roving shall be approved by purchaser before roving for productionuse is supplied,unless such approval be waived by purchaser. Results oftests on production roving shall be essentially equivalent to those on theapproved sample.-4-COP

32、se ingredients, manufacturing procedures, processes,and methods of inspection on production roving which are essentially thesame as those used on the approved sample. If necessary to make any changein ingredients,in type of equipment for processing, or in manufacturingprocedures, manufacturer shall

33、submit for reapproval a statement of theproposed changes in ingredients and/or processing and, when requested,sample roving. Production roving made by the revised procedure shall notbe shipped prior to receipt of reapproval.4.5 Test Methods:4.5.1 Volatile and Resin Content:4.5.1.14.5.1.24.5.1.3Speci

34、men Preparation: Cut three specimens, each 72 inches 0.1(1829 mm 3) long. Fold each specimen three times to a length ofapproximately 9 inches (229 mm) and tie loosely into an overhand bowknot.Volatile Content: Weigh each specimen to the nearest 0.001 gram (W,).Hang pieces separately on a rack and pl

35、ace in a circulating-air oven at135 C 3 C (275 F 5) for 15 minutes 1, cool to room temperaturein a desiccator, and reweigh each specimen (W2). Calculate volatilesusing Equation 1.Volatile Content, % =W1 - W2x 100w1(Eq. 1)where:W1= original weightW2 = final weightResin Content: Place the volatile-fre

36、e specimens of 4.5.1.2 in porcelaincrucibles brought to constant weight by heating at 845 C 25(1553 F 45) for not less than three hours. Burn out the resin byheating the specimens at 565 C 25 (1049 F 45) for three hours 0.25 in a muffle furnace. Cool in a desiccator and reweigh (W3).Calculate resin

Place a microscope slide on the heat

39、ed block, allowing20 to 30 seconds for it to reach temperature equilibrium. Cut a piece ofroving l/4 inch l/16 (6.4 mm t 1.6) long. Place a sample on the heatedmicroscope slide and commence timing. Within five seconds, place a secondmicroscope slide over the sample. As the resin softens and-during t

40、hefirst 30 seconds, isolate a drop of resin by gently pressing on the upperslide. Observe lateral movement of the resin drop while periodicallypressing on the upper slide. As the resin thickens, the lateral movementwill be retarded. A sharp color change and the formation of small dropletswhen the co

41、ver slide is pressed indicate the gel point. Stop the timer andrecord the elapsed time as gel time. Report the average of three results.4.5.3 Resin Flow: Cut six lengths of roving, each 3 inches 0.010(76 mm 0.25) long. Weigh each specimen, consisting of two 3 inch(76 mm) lengths to the nearest 0.001

42、 gram (W1). With the lengths spacedl/2 inch (12.7 mm) apart, sandwich the specimens between four layers (twoon each side of the specimen.) of ASTM D 2410-82, type 181 to 150 or type181 to 75G, glass cloth. Preheat a hot plate and a 1500-gram metal weightto 150 C 5 (302 F 9). Place the sandwiched mat

43、erial on the hotplate, cover with the metal weight, and maintain at temperature for2 minutes 0.2 using a surface thermocouple to ensure maintenance of therequired temperature. While still hot, remove the specimens from thesandwich, remove any excess resin, and cool in desiccator to roomtemperature.

44、Reweigh each specimen to the nearest 0.001 gram (W1).Calculate resin flow using Equation 3.Resin Flow, wt% =W1 - W2x 100W1(Eq.3)where:W1 = weight of specimen before heatingW2 = weight of specimen after removal of excess resin4.6 Reports:Supplier of roving shall furnish with each shipment a report sh

45、owing theresults of tests to determine conformance to the acceptance test requirementsand stating that the product conforms to the other technical requirements.This report shall include the purchase order number, lot number, AMS 3832C,manufacturers material designation,form and size or part number,

47、mpling and Retesting:(R)If any specimen used in the above tests fails to meet the specifiedrequirements, disposition of the roving may be based on the results oftesting three additional specimens for each original nonconforming specimen.Failure of any retest specimen to meet the specified requiremen

PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY:5.1 Packaging and Identification:5.1.1 Packaging shall be accomplished to ensure that the roving, during shipmentand storage, will be protected against damage from exposure to

49、weather orany other normal hazard.5.1.1.1 A lot of roving may be packaged in small quantities and delivered underthe basic lot approval provided lot identification is maintained.5.1.2 Roving shall be spiral or hoop wound into balls or milk-bottle packages oronto rigid cardboard tubes.
