11、s part of SANS 484 specifies the requirements for the conventional splicing of textile-reinforced multi-ply rubber covered conveyor belting using the cold-splicing method. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated refe

12、rences, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. Information on currently valid national and international standards can be obtained from the SABS Standards Division. SANS 1173, General purpose textile-r

13、einforced conveyor belting. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this document the following definitions apply. 3.1 bias oblique angle to the centre line of the belt (see annex B) 3.2 bonding solution solution of rubber compatible with the inter-ply rubber of the parent belt to which a cross linking ag

14、ent is added 3.3 carcass combination of plies and inter-ply rubber 3.4 cover rubber compound that has specific properties and thickness related to the required application SANS 484-2:2009 Edition 1 4 3.5 dew point temperature at which dew forms 3.6 intermediate bonding layer rubber layer to assist b

15、onding within the splice and which is compatible with the properties of the parent belt 3.7 inter-ply rubber layer of rubber between the plies of the carcass of the parent belt 3.8 multi-ply belt construction that has two or more plies 3.9 owner owner of the conveyor system or his designated represe

16、ntative 3.10 ply one of the woven textile-reinforced layers of the carcass that contributes to the belt strength 3.11 splice layout repetitive steps of the consecutive plies through the thickness of the splice 3.12 step length distance at which adjacent plies from opposite belt ends overlap in a spl

17、ice area 4 Requirements 4.1 General In order for a splice to comply with this part of SANS 484, the requirements in 4.2 to 4.7 (inclusive) shall be complied with. 4.2 Splicing layout The splice shall be constructed according to a splice layout diagram given in figure 1. The types of splice allowance are: a) 2-ply jump splice: allowance = (2 step length) + 50 + Wtan; b) Multi-ply splice: allowance = (N-1) step length) + 50 + Wtan where is the press bias angle; W is the belt width; N is the number of belt plies. 21、 1 7 4.4 Workmanship The splice, including edges, shall be substantially rectangular in cross-section and free from defects that would impair its long-term serviceability. Differences in belt thickness and worn belts shall be dealt with in a manner to ensure uniform pressure across the splice during

22、 vulcanisation. 4.5 Splicing materials 4.5.1 All materials shall be used within the shelf life as specified by the raw materials manufacturer. 4.5.2 Storage conditions of all materials shall be as defined by the raw materials manufacturer. Splicing materials shall be compatible with the parent belt

23、in all aspects. 4.5.3 An adhesion test shall be performed to determine compatibility of splicing materials with the parent belt. 4.5.4 Any evidence of moisture or carcass damage shall be recorded and brought to the immediate attention of the responsible owner or official before any further splice co

24、nstruction. 4.5.5 Minimum thickness of the intermediate bonding rubber, if used, shall be 0,5 mm. The splicing construction company shall ensure that raw materials used in the construction of the splice are capable of producing a splice that will not fail. Properties of raw materials shall be within

25、 the material manufacturers specification. The splicing solution shall show no degree of solidifying, and shall be free of contamination. Proof of compatibility of all raw materials to the parent belt shall be verified. Proof of product compatibility shall be made available to the owner as part of t

26、he quality control documentation (see annex A) before commencing the splice construction. 4.6 Apparatus 4.6.1 Essential splicing tools (see annex C) Essential splicing tools shall include the following: a) ply knife; b) double acting roller; and c) bent handle or off-set knife. 4.6.2 Apparatus for c

27、leaning and preparation of splicing surfaces The following apparatus shall be used during cleaning and preparation of splice surfaces: a) urethane or cellulose sponges; b) clean and dry brushes; and c) new clean cotton rags. SANS 484-2:2009 Edition 1 8 4.7 Environmental conditions The work area shal

28、l comply with the following conditions: a) Dry. b) Dust and pollutant free. c) Luminance shall be a minimum of 400 lux. d) Be well ventilated for chemical use so as to prevent exposure to toxic fumes by personnel working in the area. Personnel should also position themselves such that they are not e

29、xposed to toxic fumes and take precautions to prevent contact with toxic materials. e) Ambient temperature above the dew point. f) Humidity of no more than 70 % as measured on a hygrometer (see annex C). g) Compliant with conditions as laid out in clause 6. NOTE Ideally a permanent belt splicing sta

30、tion should be available. 5 Method of constructing a conventional splice of textile-reinforced multi-ply rubber covered conveyor belting 5.1 General The splice shall be constructed in accordance with the requirements as set out in figure 1 and table 1. 5.2 Practices not permitted The following pract

31、ices are not permitted: a) repairs of the completed splice; b) the use of cotton waste and paper towels for the application of solvents and solutions; and c) incorrect storage of splice materials. 5.3 Situations where splicing is not permitted Splicing is not permitted in the following situations: a

32、) if ambient temperature is less than 5 C above the dew point; and b) if the difference in the number of plies is two or greater. SANS 484-2:2009 Edition 1 9 6 Safety, health and environmental issues 6.1 Safety Safety requirements shall be in accordance with the owners requirements, and the followin

33、g: a) A site specific risk assessment shall be conducted in conjunction with the owner. The risk assessment shall address stored energy, belt clamping and the wearing of correct personal protective equipment by all operators, as well as any other conditions specific to the site. b) Material safety d

34、ata sheets shall accompany all chemicals taken onto site. Approval for all substances taken onto site shall be obtained from the owner and safety precautions as stipulated by the owner shall be adhered to. c) All equipment used in constructing a splice shall be certified as fit for use according to

35、the standards as set by the manufacturer of the equipment and by the owner. Service books or certificates of compliance (or both) for all equipment shall be available for inspection. 6.2 Health 6.2.1 All personnel involved in the construction of any particular splice shall be fully conversant with a

36、ll health hazards associated with raw materials used in the construction of a splice. 6.2.1 A copy of material safety data sheets for all raw materials used shall be available for inspection. 6.3 Environment Waste materials shall be disposed of in accordance with material safety data sheets. 7 Rejec

37、tion Criteria The rejection criteria of a completed splice are as follows: a) any blisters or bulges on the belt or bridges (or both) adjacent to the splice or in the splice area; b) belt run out, within 15 m of the splice, of more than 5 % of the belt width or a maximum of 75 mm; c) the vulcanised

38、Shore A hardness of the bridge cover rubber is not within the compound manufacturers specified parameters; d) any evidence of porosity on the splice edges or bridges; e) splice constructor has not followed the requirements of the specification; f) the use of splicing materials which do not comply wi

39、th the provisions of clause 4.5 of this part of SANS 484; and g) any other non-conformance items as detailed by the owners technical representative on site. SANS 484-2:2009 Edition 1 10 8 Methods of test 8.1 Compliance documentation Ensure that compliance documentation is available before splice con

40、struction and that the quality control documentation is provided upon splice completion. 8.2 Full load cycle test Ensure that a representative of the splicing company is available to witness the full load cycle test. 8.3 Compatibility 8.3.1 Test adhesion in accordance with SANS 1173. 8.3.2 Show prov

41、en compatibility by showing that adhesion levels as specified in SANS 1173 can be achieved by the materials. 9 Marking The belt shall be permanently marked on the bottom cover (unless otherwise specified by the owner) within 250 mm of the splice and within 100 mm from the belt edge, with a unique re

42、ference number that shall be cross-referenced to the quality control documentation for that specific splice. 10 Reports 10.1 Job card pack A job card pack consisting of the documents listed in clause 10.2 shall be supplied to the owner before the constructor leaves the site. 10.2 Job card pack compo

43、nents The job card pack comprises the following: a) raw materials quality control (see annex D); b) compliance documentation; c) risk assessment; d) calibration documentation; e) quality plan (see annex E); f) materials list (see annex F); and g) quality assurance agreement (see annex G). 45、onveyor belting using the cold-splicing method, it is suggested that, instead of concentrating solely on evaluation of the final product, he also direct his attention to the constructors quality system. In this connection it should be noted that SANS 9001 covers the provision of an integrated qualit
