It is filled withrock to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures.3.2 mattress, na wire mesh container uniformly parti-tioned into internal cells with relati
10、vely small height in relationto other dimensions. Mattresses have smaller mesh openingthan the mesh used for gabions.4. Summary of Practice4.1 The designer shall establish the suitable sizes, weight,and quality of rock for project use, and examine sources toensure that the required rock is available
11、.4.2 Rock shall be delivered to the work site in a manner tominimize its reduction in sizes (breakdown) during the han-dling of the rock, and then place and secured within theassembled and interconnected gabion or mattress.5. Significance and Use5.1 Gabions and mattresses, described in Specification
12、sA 974 and A 975, are placed on sites for stability and toprevent soil erosion. Their ability to function properly dependson their stability, which is partly dependent upon the rocksfilling them. Rock sizes should be chosed to prevent them fromfalling through the mesh of the gabions or mattresses. T
13、he rockalso has to withstand natural weathering processes during thelife of the project that would cause it to breakdown to sizessmaller than the wire mesh opening dimensions.6. Bulk Filling Materials6.1 Rock to fill gabions or mattresses may be any naturaldeposit of the required sizes, or may be cr

Standard Sizes of Rock7.1 Guidance for measurement of rock sizes is given in TestMethod D 5519. Sizes of
17、 rock to fill gabions and mattresses arechosen on the basis of the mesh sizes, the structuress thick-ness, and the limits shown in 7.4. Fabrication of sieves todetermine particle size is given in Test Method D 5519.7.2 Within each range of sizes, the rock shall be largeenough to prevent individua pi
18、eces from passing through themesh openings stated in Specifications A 974 and A 975. Eachrange of sizes may allow for a variation of 5% oversize rock bynumber of particles, or 5% undersize rock by number ofparticles, or both.7.3 In all cases, the sizes of any oversize rock shall allow forthe placeme
19、nt of three or more layers of rock within eachgabion compartment, and two or more layers of rock withineach mattress compartment dependent upon the height of themattresses. In all cases, undersize and oversize rock shall beplaced within the interior of the gabion or mattress compart-ment and shall n
20、ot be placed on the exposed surface of thestructure.
