、-2000 1 1 Scope These British Standards specify the requirements for hydraulic, surface-check type, lubricating nipples having body attachment screw threads 1 / 4in. 28, Unified Fine (UNF), Class 2A limits. Three types of nipple are specified: a) straight and in one piece, with attachment screw thre
、ads on one end of the body and the nipple on the other (Figure 2); b) a body with attachment screw threads on one end and a nipple set in the other end at 45 to the axis of the attachment screw threads (Figure 3); c) a body with attachment screw threads at one end and a nipple set in the other end a
、t 90 to the axis of the attachment screw threads (Figure 4). Section 1. General requirements 2 Construction and performance a) The nipples shall incorporate a check valve, located at the surface of the nipple inlet tip, which with its seat shall provide a seal against the ingress of dirt or other fo
、reign matter, but shall admit lubricant and prevent its escape, as required byd) tof) below. b) Springs shall be of non-collapsing design and of such quality of wire as to withstand the tests specified in this British Standard. c) The external surface of the nipple to be in contact, after installati
、on, with a gun nozzle or coupler, shall be hardened to a case depth of 0.003 in. 0.005 in. Other parts required by the manufacturers approved drawings to be hardened shall be hardened as specified on the drawings. d) The nipples shall satisfactorily admit lubricant at1 000 lb/sq. in. without appreci
、able leakage when a hydraulic-type coupler of approved design is connected and inclined to an angle of not less than10 in any radial direction between the axis of the coupler and the axis of inlet tip of the nipple. e) The opening pressure of the check valve shall be between 140 lb/sq. in. and 500 l
、b/sq. in. f) The nipple shall retain lubricant at a sustained pressure of 5 000 lb/sq. in. without a total leakage in excess of 2 cu.cm in one minute. 3 Materials The nipples shall be made from steel complying with approved specifications see Clause 9 a). The manufacturers drawings and/or the specif
、ications shall specify the materials and heat treatments and tests required on them. 4 Dimensions The nipples shall conform to the envelope dimensions shown in Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4, and to those shown in the approved drawings (see Section 2, Clause 10), which shall be provided
、with adequate dimensions and limits. The minimum clearance required around the nipples when they are installed in position is shown in Figure 5. 5 Screw threads a) The nipples shall each embody an attachment screw thread of a form to permit the nipple to be screwed tightly into a boss tapped with a
、1 / 4in. 28 UNF 2B screw thread complying with the latest issue of BS 1580, “Unified screw threads”. b) Details of attachment screw threads shall be shown on approved manufacturing drawings and shall comprise 1 / 4in. 28 UNF 2A screw thread, complying with the latest issue of BS 1580, having2 1 / 2t
、hreads run-out (root taper). c) Any other screw threads used in the internal construction of the nipples shall be in accordance with the approved drawing. d) The screw threads, before and after plating, shall be required to pass gauges approved by the Inspecting Authority. 6 Anti-corrosion treatment
、 The body, and nipples before assembly, shall be uniformly coated with cadmium, in accordance with the latest issue of Ministry of Supply aircraft process specification D.T.D.904. The protective treatment for other parts shall be in accordance with the approved drawings. 7 Freedom from defects a) Th
、e nipples shall be free from harmful defects. b) The nipples may be rejected at any time for faults in, or revealed by, manufacture, although they have been made from material passed previously for chemical composition and mechanical properties. 8 Identification and marking a) The nipples shall be i
、dentified as “Unified” by a pattern of contiguous circles, e.g. OOO, of 3 / 32in. diameter indented on one or more flats of the hexagon and parallel to the axis of the nipple. b) The nipples shall be identified for ordering purposes by the relevant British Standard number shown in Table 1. The speci
、fication number shall not be marked on the part.BSSP 115 to 117:1956 2 BSI 04-2000 c) The nipples shall be made into parcels which shall have the appropriate British Standard number and the Unified symbol of contiguous circles clearly marked on the labels. Table 1 British Standard Numbers Section 2
、9 Inspection and testing a) For inspection purposes the manufacturers Inspecting Authority shall be provided with approved manufacturing drawings 1)and manufacturers approved specifications 1) , if any. Any changes in the drawings and specifications shall similarly be notified on approved drawings a
、nd specifications and the Inspecting Authority shall have the right to carry out a complete series of tests before accepting any nipples to the new drawings and/or specifications. b) The nipples shall comply with the inspection and testing requirements specified in this section. The inspections and
、tests shall be carried out to the satisfaction of the Inspecting Authority at whose discretion any quantity of nipples may be required to be submitted to any or all of the inspections and tests specified. The manufacturer shall satisfy the Inspecting Authority that adequate control is maintained thr
、oughout manufacture to ensure compliance with the approved drawings and specifications. c) For the purposes of this section of the standard the following definitions shall apply: i) Batch. The output of an effectively continuous production run of each nipple free from any changes such as might be ex
、pected to result in an appreciable variation in the quality of the finished product. ii) Random sample. A sample taken in such a manner that every nipple in the batch has a substantially equal chance of selection and the sample is thus a representative cross-section of the whole batch. 10 Batch A ma
、nufacturing batch and batch record chart (or card) shall be established to the satisfaction of the Inspecting Authority. The record chart (or card) shall show the serial numbers of certificates covering approval of all materials and anti-corrosion treatments, and the results of all other inspections
、 and tests specified in this British Standard. 11 Sampling before components are assembled a) A random sample containing 100 components shall be taken from each batch of a 1 000 or more components of each type. These batches shall not exceed 10 000 components. b) A random sample containing 25 compon
、ents shall be taken from each batch of less than 1 000 components of each type. c) A batch of components shall be deemed to complywith the requirements of Section 1, Clauses3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, and Section 2, Clauses12 and 13 of this British Standard if the sample is proved to comply and the other req
、uirements of this British Standard have been complied with to the satisfaction of the Inspecting Authority. If a component in the sample does not comply, all similar components in the batch shall be inspected for freedom from faults similar to those found in the sample component. All components in t
、he batch which contain faults similar to those in the sample component shall be removed from the batch and a record shall be made on the batch chart (or card) of the quantity of components removed from the batch. d) The component batch number shall be correlated with the batch chart (or card) of the
、 nipples (seeClause 10). 12 Component dimensions and finish The components shall be inspected to verify that they conform to the approved drawings. 13 Heat treatments and tests on components a) A minimum quantity of one per cent of hardened parts shall be selected from each heat-treated batch of par
