、ersonnel to facilitate the operation, maintenance and management of the satellite earth station network. At earth stations operating with SCPC, two channel units providing two pairs of frequencies, as described in IEC835-3-9, are normally assigned for duplex transmission. The utilization of these fr
、equency pairs for the transmission of different kinds of calls such as station-to-station calls, station-to-operation centre calls, broadcast (point-to-multipoint) calls, depends on the applied service channel transmission system, and differs in the individual satellite networks (Intelsat, Arabsat,
、Intersputniketc.). Similar differences exist in the applied signalling systems, available priority levels, and type of services available (telephone, telegraph, data, etc.). In view of these differences, functional tests applicable to the specific system applied shall normally be carried out for the
、 characterization of the service channel equipment to be tested. In addition, performance tests can also be carried out whenever suitable interface test points are available. 4 Measurement method 4.1 Functional tests In order to carry out the functional tests on the service channel equipment under t
、est, measuring equipment intended to simulate the equipment at the distant earth station is required. Previously tested service channel equipment may also be used as the measuring equipment. The equipment under test and measuring equipment shall be interconnected with their associated channel units
、as during actual operation, and the functional tests shall be carried out following the terminal equipment tests. These latter are given in IEC835-3-9, by setting up an i.f.loop-back connection. According to the test arrangement shown in Figure 1, a service channel connection in the SEND direction i
、s established from the equipment under test to the measuring equipment, and in the RECEIVE direction from the measuring equipment to the equipment under test. NOTEIf it is required to test the service channel equipment under the worst case conditions, an i.f.noise source should be inserted into the
、i.f.loop RECEIVE path to simulate the noise generated in the satellite uplink/downlink paths. After setting up this test arrangement, the following functional tests shall be carried out. Initiate a call from the equipment under test (SEND direction) by dialling the number assigned to the measuring e
、quipment, and from the measuring equipment (RECEIVE direction) by dialling the number assigned to the equipment under test. Verify that connection with the called equipment has been established. Verify also that no connection is established by dialling a number assigned to a third equipment. Repeat
、the above for different call types such as station-to-station calls, broadcast calls, etc., as applicable.EN60835-3-11:1995 4 BSI 01-2000 Following call initiation, verify audible and/or visual signalling, as appropriate, both for an established connection and for a simulated busy condition. Verify
、that no unwanted call interruption has occurred over an extended time-span. During an established telephone connection, evaluate the intelligibility of the telephone conversation. During an established telegraph connection, evaluate the erroneous characters in the received telegraph message by sendi
、ng standardized text (such as “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”). Verify operation under priority conditions, if applicable, by observing the disconnection of a previously established lower priority call, and the through connection of a higher priority call. Following call termination, v
、erify the return to the idle state by observing the signalling information. Note that the preceding functional tests will implicitly include the checking of the channel unit synthesizer frequency control by the service channel equipment (the interchanging of transmit and receive frequencies when pla
、cing a station-to-station call) and also the channel transmitter enable/disable control by the service channel equipment conditions (during transmission/reception only or idle state). 4.2 Performance tests The arrangement shown in Figure 1is primarily used for functional tests but can also be applie
、d to carry out additional performance tests whenever suitable interface test points are available. The following is a list of performance parameters which can be measured on the service channel equipment used for telephone transmission: insertion loss; frequency response; non-linear distortion; psop
、hometric noise; spurious tones. Measurement methods for these parameters are given in IEC835-1-2 and IEC835-1-3. Additional parameters such as signalling level, cross-talk attenuation between two directions of transmission, dial pulse parameters, etc.can also be measured if appropriate. Measurement
、of telegraph parameters may also be required but are beyond the scope of this standard. 5 Presentation of results For each functional test, results shall be presented as a simple pass/fail test record. For each performance test, results shall be presented as given in the relevant clauses of IEC835-1
、-2 and IEC835-1-3. 6 Details to be specified a) Listing of the functional tests to be performed. b) Listing of the performance tests to be performed (if applicable), together with specified limit values.EN 60835-3-11:1995 BSI 01-2000 5 NOTEIf the channel unit i.f.output and input frequencies and/or
、levels are not identical, then suitable interface equipment is also required in the i.f.loop connection.
