7、WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULINTRODUCTION1 Scope1.1 These requirements cover nitrogen generator units for use in dry type fire sprinkler systems. Thisequipment is intended for installation in accordance with the manufacturers installation instructions andthe applicable requirements of the following sta

8、ndards:a) Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, ANSI/NFPA 13.b) Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Low-Rise Residential Occupancies,ANSI/NFPA 13R.c) Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings andManufactured Homes. ANSI/NFPA 1

9、3Dd) National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.2 Components2.1 Except as indicated in 2.2, a component of a product covered by this Outline shall comply with therequirements for that component.2.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteri

10、stic not required in the application of the component in theproduct covered by this Outline, orb) Is superseded by a requirement in this Outline.2.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions ofuse.2.4 Specific components are incomplete in constru

13、ents of this Outline shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.CONSTRUCTION5 General5.1 A nitrogen generator unit shall include the following equipment:a) Air compressor,b) A means to separate nitrogen from air using technology such as membrane or pressureswing

14、absorption and associated pre-filtering elements,c) Control units, andd) Air or nitrogen receiver or both an air and nitrogen receiver, if the nitrogen generatorcapacity is greater than 5.5 ft3/min (156 l/min) at 10 psig (0.7 bar).5.2 An air compressor shall be permitted to be shipped separately fro

15、m the equipment described in 5.1b) 5.1 d) where instructions are provided for proper assembly at the installation location. See 12.1.5.3 The air compressor and associated nitrogen generator equipment covered by this Outline shallcomply with the construction requirements of the Standard for Motor Ope

16、rated Compressors, VacuumPumps and Painting Equipment, ANSI/UL 1450 as applicable to use in sprinkler systems.5.4 Pressure vessels shall be permitted to comply with the applicable design requirements of the UnitedStates Department of Transportation or Canadian Transport Commission as a shipping cont

17、ainer in lieuof complying with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) requirements referenced inANSI/UL 1450.5.5 Nitrogen generator control units covered by this Outline shall comply with the applicable constructionrequirements of the Standard for Industrial Control Panels, UL 508A.5.6

18、If the equipment to remove oxygen from air is within an enclosure, such as a control panel, a meansshall be provided to prevent the creation of an enriched oxygen concentration within the enclosure suchas the use of a ventilation fan or external discharge port.FEBRUARY 10, 2015 UL 2879 5UL COPYRIGHT

19、ED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULPERFORMANCE6 General6.1 The air compressor and associated nitrogen generator equipment covered by this Outline shallcomply with the applicable performance requirements of ANSI/UL 1450 as applicable to use in

20、 sprinklersystems.6.2 Pressure vessels shall be permitted to comply with the applicable performance requirements of theUnited States Department of Transportation or Canadian Transport Commission as a shipping containerin lieu of complying with the ASME requirements referenced in ANSI/UL 1450.6.3 Nit

21、rogen generator control units covered by this Outline shall comply with the applicable performancerequirements of the Standard for Industrial Control Panels, UL 508A.7 Nitrogen Concentration Test7.1 A nitrogen generator unit shall produce at least 98 percent nitrogen within 10 seconds after purgingo

22、f the downstream containment system when tested in accordance with 7.2 7.5.7.2 The nitrogen concentration test is to be conducted using a representative sample of each nitrogengenerator model in an ambient environment of 75 10F (24 5C), and within the manufacturersspecifications for the upstream and

23、 downstream pressures for the nitrogen separation element.7.3 A zirconium oxide analyzer, calibrated to measure oxygen or nitrogen concentrations within 0.2percent of actual concentration, shall be used to determine the nitrogen concentration. Prior to testing, themeasuring equipment shall be calibr

24、ated at both a nominal 2 percent and atmospheric oxygen (nominal20.9%) levels. Alternative nitrogen concentration measuring equipment shall be permitted to be used if itcan be demonstrated to provide equivalent accuracy.7.4 For nitrogen generators using membrane separation technology, the nitrogen c

25、oncentration is to bemeasured immediately downstream of the membrane. The unit is to be operated and provisions made forimmediate purging of the piping downstream of the membrane. The test is to be conducted for not lessthan 1 minute after purging. The pressures upstream and downstream of the membra

26、ne, and the time toachieve at least 98 percent nitrogen after purging, are to be recorded.7.5 For nitrogen generators using pressure swing absorption separation technology, the nitrogenconcentration is to be measured in a nitrogen receiver tank. The unit is to be operated and provisionsmade for full

27、y purging the nitrogen receiver tank. The test is to be conducted for not less than 1 minuteafter purging. The pressures upstream and downstream of the pressure swing absorption element, andthe time to achieve at least 98 percent nitrogen after purging are to be recorded.FEBRUARY 10, 2015UL 28796UL

28、COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL8 30-Day Performance and Operation Test8.1 During and after 30 days of operation, a nitrogen generator unit shall produce at least 98 percentnitrogen when tested in accordance with 8.2 8.5.8.2 The 3

29、0-day performance and operation test is to be conducted using a representative sample of eachnitrogen generator model in an ambient environment of 75 10F (24 5C) and a relative humidity of notless than 50 percent. The unit is to be operated under the following conditions:a) The inlet pressure to the

30、 nitrogen separation element shall be the maximum specified by themanufacturer.b) The pressure downstream of the nitrogen separation element shall be within the rangespecified by the manufacturer for system starting and shutoff. If the system is not provided witha nitrogen receiver tank, the downstr

31、eam pressure range is to be 30 psig (2 bar) to 40 psig (2.7bar).c) The duty cycle shall be not less than 50 percent.d) The average nitrogen generation rate generated during each period of operation shall not beless than the rate specified by the manufacturer for the unit.8.3 A zirconium oxide analyz

32、er calibrated to measure oxygen or nitrogen concentrations within 0.2percent of actual concentration shall be used to determine the nitrogen concentration. Prior to testing, themeasuring equipment shall be calibrated at both a nominal 2 percent and atmospheric oxygen (nominal20.9%) levels. Alternati

33、ve nitrogen concentration measuring equipment shall be permitted to be used if itcan be demonstrated to provide equivalent accuracy.8.4 For nitrogen generators using membrane separation technology, the nitrogen concentration is to bemeasured immediately downstream of the membrane. The unit is to be

34、operated with provisions made forpurging the downstream piping to facilitate unit cycling. The average nitrogen generation rate during theoperating cycle shall be determined and shall not be less than the rate specified in 8.2 d). The on/off cycletimes, pressures upstream and downstream of the membr

35、ane, and the nitrogen concentration level duringeach operating cycle are to be recorded. Repair or maintenance procedures for the nitrogen generator unitare not permitted to be performed during this test period.8.5 For nitrogen generators using pressure swing absorption separation technology, the ni

36、trogenconcentration is to be measured in a nitrogen receiver tank. The unit is to be operated and provisionsmade for fully purging the nitrogen receiver tank. Provisions shall then be made for tank purging tofacilitate unit cycling. The average nitrogen generation rate during the operating cycle sha

37、ll be determinedand shall not be less than the rate specified in 8.2 d). The on/off cycle times, pressures upstream anddownstream of the pressure swing absorption element, and the nitrogen concentration level during eachoperating cycle are to be recorded. Repair or maintenance procedures for the nit

39、/nitrogen receiver shall be comply with the applicable production testingrequirements of ANSI/UL 1450 and the nitrogen generator control units shall comply with the applicableproduction testing requirements of the Standard for Industrial Control Panels, UL 508A.9.2 A pressure vessel produced in acco

40、rdance with the requirements of the United States Department ofTransportation or Canadian Transport Commission shall be tested in accordance with the applicablerequirements.10 Nitrogen Generator Unit10.1 Each nitrogen generator unit shall be tested in accordance with Section 7, Nitrogen Concentratio

41、nTest, to determine that 98% nitrogen is produced. This test shall be permitted to be conducted using afactory air compressor that is not intended to be supplied with the unit.10.2 Each nitrogen generator unit shall be tested for leakage at the normal operating pressures usingcalibrated leak detecto

42、rs, leak detector compounds, or other means that provide equivalent results.MARKING11 General11.1 Each nitrogen generator unit shall be legibly and permanently marked with the following:a) The manufacturers or private labelers name or identifying symbol,b) A distinctive product identification design

44、DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULINSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS12 General12.2 Nitrogen generator units shall be provided with installation and maintenance instructions that includeat least the following items:a) Detailed instructions for properly installing the units.b) If the air c

45、ompressor is provided separately, detailed instructions for properly connecting theair compressor to the nitrogen generator unit.c) Detailed instructions for maintaining the unit including maintenance required to maintain thedesired level of nitrogen within the system.d) Reference to the need for pr

46、oper ventilation and installation in accordance with OSHAregulations to avoid an excessive concentration of oxygen in an area.e) Reference to the need for periodic or continuous monitoring of the nitrogen purityimmediately downstream of the nitrogen separation element and within the sprinkler system
